Rigs The institute has access to the company’s 7 high capacity Drilling Rigs, with a capacity to drill up to 7 km. The rigs are critical for on job training sessions
Drilling Simulator Highly specialized simulator which provides a complete and detailed immersive simulation experience of the start to finish drilling operations on a virtual rig including pipe-handling, tripping in, tripping out, drilling, mud system operation, cementing operations and well control training.
Modern field and Laboratory Equipment An Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and an Ion Chromatograph (IC) equipment at the geochemistry laboratory – Used for geothermal sampling & analysis

The Geothermal Center of Excellence Trainers

Eng. Joel Rutto Sutter is an accomplished Electrical, Electro-Mechanical and Energy expert. He is a Drilling Engineer at Geothermal Development Company (GDC), with 9 years’ experience in Engineering practice; Rig Drive systems, Electrical Plant, geothermal drilling engineering, power system design, control, analysis, training and research. He is curriculum reviewer/developer in the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (JKUAT). Sutter is a registered Engineer with Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and Professional Technology Engineer (KETRB). He has published widely peer reviewed engineering journal papers. He holds a MSc. in Electrical Engineering from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical and Communications Engineering from Moi and Masinde Muliro University’s and member of both the Institution of Engineering Technology of Kenya (IET) and Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK).

Wellington M. Kivure is a Senior Engineer, Drilling Operations at the Geothermal Development Company. He has over 10 years of experience in various fields including geothermal well drilling, well intervention services, tubular management and technical sales. Mr. Kivure holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) Degree in Project Management from Kenyatta University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Nairobi. Mr. Kivure is a registered Graduate Engineer (GE) with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and a member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (MIEK).

Eng. Michael Kamau is an instructor in the field of Drilling and Well Technology. He is a Directional Drilling Engineer at Geothermal Development Company (GDC), with over nine years’ experience in geothermal well design and day to day rig operations. Eng Kamau is a registered professional Engineer and holds an MEng in Petroleum Engineering – Drilling and well technology from the University of New South Wales in Sidney Australia, Bsc in Mechatronics Engineering from JKUAT, Kenya.

Eng. Francis K. Wanjohi is a Cementing Engineer at the Geothermal Development Company with over 7 years’ experience in Geothermal Drilling Technology with a bias in Well Cementing. He holds a Master of Science (MSc), Project Management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and a Bachelors of Technology (B.Tech) Chemical and Process Engineering from Moi University. Engineer Wanjohi is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) with Engineers Board of Kenya, a Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (MIEK) and Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Miyora has worked previously for a span of 5 years as a Maintenance Engineer, Projects Engineer and Teacher. Miyora holds an MSc Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iceland, a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nairobi, a Post Graduate diploma in Drilling Technology from United Nations University-GTP Iceland and a diploma in Project management from KIM.

Peter Muchendu Mburu is an accomplished Mechanical, Manufacturing and Energy expert. He is a Drilling Engineering specialist at Geothermal Development Company (GDC), with 14 years’ experience in Mechanical Engineering practice; Automotive, Plant, Thermo-Fluids, Training and Research. Mburu is a registered Professional Technology Engineer (KETRB), registered Research Engineer (IAE) and registered Associate EIA/EA expert. He holds a MSc. in Energy Technology from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Bachelor of Engineering degree in Industrial Engineering Technology from Egerton University and Corporate member of the Institution of Engineering Technology of Kenya (MIET).

Eng. Fred Keny is a Drilling Engineer in the Drilling Operations Department. He holds a Masters of Business Administration (MBA), Operations Management from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelors of Technology (B.Tech) Chemical and Processing Engineering from Moi University. He is a registered Professional Engineer (PE), a Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (MIEK) and Operations Management Society of Kenya (OMSK). He has five (5) years’ experience in Business Operational Technology and four (4) years in Geothermal Drilling Technology.

Jeremiah Kipngok is a seasoned exploration and reservoir Geochemist at Geothermal Development Company (GDC). He has over 14 years work experience in the geothermal industry. Jeremiah holds a MSc. in Project Management and BSc in Chemistry and Mathematics from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Post Graduate Certificate in Chemistry of Thermal Fluids from United Nations University, Geothermal Training Programme (UNU-GTP), Iceland. He is a member of Geothermal Association of Kenya (GAK).

Mr. Joseph Mutua, Senior GIS Analyst at Geothermal Development Company Ltd. (GDC) will be leading instructor of the short course drawing on his experience in GIS and 3D modelling using Leapfrog Geothermal and Voxler. Joseph has worked as a GIS analyst at GDC for the last 7 years designing and deploying data management systems for geothermal data storage, GIS analysis, Remote sensing, Engineering Surveying among other activities. Joseph has an MSc degree in GIS from the University of Nairobi, BSc (Hons) in Geomatic Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He is a member of the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya.

Deflorah Kangogo is a Geophysicist at Geothermal Development Company (GDC), with eight 8 years of experience in geophysical exploration as an expert in seismology, Resistivity, Gravity and Magnetics. Deflorah holds an M.Sc. in Geology (Applied Geophysics) from University of Nairobi, Master of Energy from the university of Auckland, B.Sc. in Geology from University of Nairobi and Certificate in Geothermal Exploration and Exploration Geophysics from UNU-GTP short course in Kenya.

Lucy Njue is a geologist with over 12 years working experience at Geothermal Development Company (GDC). She holds a MSc. in Geology and BSc degree from University of Nairobi. Her regional experience includes field geology consultancies in Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Sudan. She has published various scientific papers and presented in several international conferences.

Noor holds B.Sc. degree in Geology from University of Nairobi, M.Sc. in Geology and Hydrogeology from Wright State University, Dayton, OH. Certificate and Post Graduate Diploma in Geothermal Exploration and Exploration Geophysics from UNU-GTP short course in Kenya and Iceland respectively. Geol. Noor is a member of Geological Society of Kenya (GSK), Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and Association of Groundwater Engineers & Scientists (AGES).

Mechanical Engineer with MSc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iceland, Iceland. Has also BSc (hons) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He also hold a Post Graduate Certificate in Geothermal Utilisation from United Nations University (UNU), Iceland. He has worked as an Engineer (Reservoir and Steam fields) for over 8 years under the Geothermal Resource Management Department for the Geothermal Development Company (GDC). Also worked worked for 2 years in the Ministry of Energy under the department of Renewable Energy. Has trained in Geothermal Reservoir Simulation and Modelling. Is a certified IPMA project management associate.

Dr. Thecla M. Mutia is the lead instructor Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit (ESIA/EA) studies. She is an Environment and Natural Resource Management specialist at Geothermal Development Company (GDC), with 10 years of experience in implementation of sustainable Environmental Management and Monitoring Plans (EMMPs) for geothermal energy projects. Dr. Mutia is a registered Lead EIA/EA expert and holds a PhD in Environment and Natural Resources from the University of Iceland, MSc and BSc in Environment Science from Egerton University, Kenya.
